Jackie Gavin-Thompson is a creative and outspoken person with a passion for mentoring and motivating others. She earned her bachelor’s degree in human resource management from Purdue University, which has made her work even more meaningful. During the school year, she works as a substitute teacher and also works in human resources in the health care, insurance and education fields throughout the year. She has more than 15 years of experience in health care, which is what brought her to One Purpose Love Foundation’s Youth Empowerment Day.

Gavin-Thompson believes strongly in the power of mentorship and the importance of having someone to talk to. Her goal is to help young people understand that guidance through mentorship can support growth and personal development. She notes that the first step to improving mental health is talking to someone—recognizing that you need help and being willing to move forward.

Outside of work, Gavin-Thompson can often be found at church, doing what she loves. She is a people person whose charismatic energy fills a room. Her outspoken personality is reflected in her drive and determination to create positive change in others.

At Youth Empowerment Day, Gavin-Thompson facilitated the workshop “It’s Okay to Ask for Help.” The session focused on teaching youth the importance of reaching out to trusted adults, teachers, counselors or mentors during times of need. It provided tools and resources to help them find support, while also giving participants an opportunity to share experiences, address concerns and learn steps to move forward together.
